Banner Exchanges

Banner Exchanges allow you to show banners (for the exchange) on your site, in return for your banner being shown on other sites.

Be aware of the following:
  • Each banner exchange has its own exchange ratio for example 2:1. This is ratio between the number of banners you show for the exchange, and the number of your banners shown on other exchange members' sites. For example, 2:1 means that for every 2 banners shown on your site, 1 of your banners is shown on another member's site.

  • Many banner exchanges include some form of targeting: you can specify what types of sites your banner is shown on. Careful targeting can improve your results.

  • Some banner exchanges are based on the exchange of impressions (banner displays), whereas others are based on the exchange of clicks or hits, and yet more are based on a combination of the two.

  • For maximum benefit - if your banner is very effective, you should use an impression-based banner exchange - but if you banner is not so effective, you should use a click-based exchange.

  • Some banner exchanges grant you free impressions when you join or for referring new members.

    • Banner Design - Learn about effective banner design and how to get a good response.
    • Intermediate pages - most banner exchanges don't reward you for Click-Thru's, so in these cases you don't need to encourage clicks on these banners. Place the banners on intermediate pages, such as part way through a form, at the bottom of multi-page articles, etc.
    • Increase page views - the number of "credits" you earn to display on your site, will depend on the number of other people's banners you show on yours. Review your site's navigation to see if you can find ways to increase the average number of page views (and hence banners shown) per visitor.
    • Read the rules - all banner exchanges have rules. Make sure you follow them - but also - make sure you don't do give away any more than you need to.
    • Filter - you won't want to host banners which might offend your audience or paying advertisers. Make sure you select the appropriate filters so you don't show inappropriate banners on your site.
    • Ratios - Most banner exchanges offer a 2:1 ratio (one display of your banner for every 2 banners you show on your site), some banner exchanges offer higher ratios. Don't be sucked in by over-high ratios - if the banner exchange is slow - you won't get all the credits you think you should (because you don't get credit if the banner doesn't fully load) - similarly if the other sites are poor quality, it may not be worth advertising (even for free) on them.
