The Web lives on hyperlinks. Swapping links with other sites can be a great way to grow your traffic:-- Some people will click on these links to you - and this will help you increase your traffic directly.
- Many search engines use "Link Popularity" (the number and types of sites linking to you) as a measure of your site's importance. More popular sites tend to be ranked higher in search results, and therefore swapping links can also help increase traffic indirectly.
Of course, not everybody will want to swap links with you, and any civilized approach to this marketing technique should take this into account. I recommend:that you:-- Attempt to locate sites on related topics to yours, each containing valuable information for your visitors, and that you believe might like to swap links with you.
- Add a link to the other site, first.
- Contact each site individually (don't use one of those automated link generating programs) and personally, complementing them on some unique aspect of their site, mentioning that you've added a link to them, and politely requesting a link back.
- Do not harass or pursue other sites - just because you swapping links is your priority - it does not mean it's theirs.
- If you don't hear anything back after a couple of weeks you can either remove the link from your site, or you can leave it up. However, if you are doing this honestly, you would only add links to sites that you felt offered your users some genuine value, in which case, I'd question why you would want to remove such a valuable link.
