Shareware Directories
Listing your E-Book in shareware directories (there are literally hundreds of them and some of the major ones have huge traffic) is one of the best ways to promote it. Not all shareware directories will list E-Books (you are probably more likely to an EXE E-Book listed at many sites than a PDF E-Book, because EXE files are perceived as "software" but PDF is perceived as a "document").
Shareware directories are usually happy to list free E-Books, but if you are selling your E-Book you will need to produce a limited version which can be used by a person before they commit to buying. For example, you could use the password protection features of Activ E-Book Compiler to create an E-Book which can be partly read for free - but requires a user to pay for a password before they can read the entire work.
Here are links to some major shareware sites:-You can find more shareware directories by looking at this page: http://dmoz.org/Computers/Software/Directories/
