Sigs Most e-mail programs (and even many free web-based e-mail services) allow you to add a signature or "sig" file to the bottom of each e-mail you send, or each message you post to newsgroups or discussion lists. The idea of a signature file is it allows a little bit of personal or business information to each message you send. It's a great marketing tool, it's easy and best of all it's free advertising - so why neglect it? A good signature file should include your name, your business, your marketing tag line, and a link to your web site. If a person reading your message, decides they want to find out more about what you have to offer, the information is right there. Of course it would be dumb (and probably count as spam) to send messages just for the purpose of getting your sig out there - but if you're sending the message anyway, why not take advantage of this free advertising? One last point: one of the most annoying things on discussion lists can be those people who have excessively long sigs (and remember some people reading your messages may have a slow connection or pay for connection time by the minute) - so keep your sig short! Some newsgroups and discussion lists do have specific rules about sigs - so read and obey these - but even for those groups that don't - remember that excessively long sigs are considered "bad form".
